Outdoor BBQ Ventilation

outdoor bbq ventilation

Lets face it everybody loves a BBQ, especially during the summer months. A fixed position BBQ or outdoor grille when in use can generate a lot of excess smoke/steam from cooking, therefore it is very important to ensure that the area is adequately ventilated. At Pure ventilation we have a few different options for providing ventilation to your BBQ.

Roof Mounted BBQ Ventilation Fan

A popular solution is to install a roof mounted fan. A roof fan means that the motor is located on the roof, as opposed to directly above you. You would then run ducting (typically semi rigid or fire rated ducting) to an intake vent over your BBQ area. This solution means that you can pick an attractive intake vent that may be similar to your outdoor design theme/style.

Example Products for a metal roof:

  • Capacity: 468 m3/hr (130 l/s)
    Motor Type: Centrifugal
    Ductable: Yes (150mm duct diameter)

High quality aluminium roof cowl with incorporated fan. The roof fan has the motor component in the Aluminium cowl at the top (see picture below). Also included in this package is a HDPE tube and dektite for a metal roof. These fans are extremely high quality designed for longevity of operation. The fan also operates quietly when you are inside the premises, making the roof fan a popular choice for the noise conscious or those with limited space. Note the colour differs from the image shown, most items are silver.

Inline Fan for BBQ Ventilation

Another popular and equally effective solution can be an inline fan in the roofspace/void above the BBQ area. Similar to a roof mounted solution the fan does not have to be installed directly above you, therefore once again minimizing the noise. You can then run ducting to an intake vent above the BBQ. At the other end of the inline fan you can either run ducting to a roof cowl or an external wall vent. A popular inline fan model for this application is the Fanco VKM centrifugal fan. This fan can be wired by an electrician to a variable dimmer style switch, meaning you can control the speed (extraction rate) of the fan. You may not always require the fan to be operating at full speed, so this can be a very useful feature for this particular application.

  • Manufactured in quality stainless steel, this gravity louvred vent – commonly known as a flap vent – is designed to allow air to be vented into the atmosphere, while stopping cold air and pests entering the system when not in use.

It has gravity flaps that opens up when the fan runs. (the fan blows the flaps open with the air it pushes). It is ideal for keeping insects out (in windy areas, the flaps can move due to the wind creating some noise)

Ceiling Mounted Fan for BBQ Ventilation

You may also install a ceiling mounted fan above the cooking area to extract the steam and smoke. A popular choice in this instance would be one of our commercial grade extraction fans. With the fan being a commercial grade product it is suitable for continuous running and you also have the added bonus of the fan being able to be speed controlled via the dimmer style switch. The fan that we typically sell in this instance is the Fanco OV range.

Example Products for Ceiling Mounted system:

  • The Speed controller is used for smooth speed control of domestic fans. Controller must be placed in the mounting box.

    Basic Technical Specification

    • Supply Voltage 230v, 50/60Hz
    • Output power, not more than 300w (load current not more than 1.8a)
    • Overall Dimensions, not more than 78x78x63mm
    • Weight, not more than 0.11kg
    • IP40 Rated

The controller casing is made of plastic. The controller is featured with high efficiency and control accuracy. Switching to the maximum speed is effected by means of regulating the control knob. Regulating starts from the minimum to the maximum voltage value for the fan stable running. The minimum speed is set by means of the potentiometer at PCB. Controller must be installed onto vertical wall in hidden or external mounting box inside premises.

The OV1 range is ideal for high usage domestic or commercial applications. The fans are available in two sizes. They have sealed, ball bearing motors which are rated as “continuous” running. They can be speed controlled and connected to short lengths of duct. If you wish to speed control the fan you will need to purchase the additional controller (listed below), which will need to be hardwired by an electrician.
